Sounds simple, but I realize that this can be a thoughtful decision by most genealogists armed with limited time and money. (Hence my APG Professional Management Conference lecture on the topic of choosing learning opportunities.)

What is it you need to learn for your current business or personal goals? How soon can you apply it after learning it? i.e. Do you have a need to understand federal records better or will you be taking a trip to Washington, DC and be able to use the information in the course the Sayres are teaching? Perhaps you are looking to do a New England, French, or Irish project or want to have a better understanding of those areas. Or you would like to learn more about writing a family history or Internet searching or are curious about what it takes to get credentialed or avenues for being a professional? Advanced methodology coordinated by Tom Jones is always a treat.

The courses each have a coordinator (or two) who put together a sequence of lectures offered by themselves and other coordinators and instructors. Although the coordinator is responsible for the course, you may experience lectures from others. Some courses are over in the mid-afternoon not only to let you have some library time but also there are evening lectures which you can sign up for separately. These are presented as an ala carte smorgasbord of various topics.

SLIG coordinators put together the lecture handouts from the 20 lectures in
their course which are then placed in student notebooks. Some lectures may include in-class exercises. Homework may or may not be given.

The Problem Solving course is meant to take your problem, get advice from the group mentors (and peers) and then execute the advice or research plan in the library only to come back the next day and report what was found and develop a new plan.

SLIG, for the most part, does not offer the same courses each year. And even if they seem to be the same, they will vary a little as tweaking is natural for the instructors. <g> Therefore if you see something you are interested in, don't think that you will just take it the following year. It may not be offered.

Best wishes on your decision,
Elissa

It's time for Salt Lake Institute Registration!

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; Topics will include:

Basic Principles & Search Tactics for Tracing Immigrant Origins

Compiled American Records, pt 1: Databases, Family Histories & Genealogies

Compiled American Records, pt 2: Biographies and Local Histories

Published Lists and Indexes of Immigrants (print & electronic)

The Ebb and Flow of Immigrants to America, Colonial Times to World War II

U.S. Customs and Immigration Lists, 1820-1957

U.S. Passenger Lists on the Internet

Naturalization Records, Colonial Times to Early Twentieth Century

U.S. Passports and Border Crossings

Local Original Records, pt 1: Church and Vital Records

Local Original Records, pt 2: Newspapers, Cemeteries, Probates and Others

Ethnic Sources and Immigrant Aid Societies

Military, Census and Other Federal Sources

Foreign Compiled Sources

Foreign Passenger and Permissions Lists: Online & Off

British History and Emigration Sources

European History and Emigration Sources

Scandinavian History and Emigration Sources

Colonial Sources and Strategies

Room is still available, register at www.infouga.org.

SLIG - Central and Eastern European Research

For researchers it can be intimidating to discover your roots leading to the Central and Eastern European countries of Austro-Hungary, Russia and Germany. Kitzmiller II, AG, FSG, FRSAI, FSA (Scot), leads the Salt Lake Institutes 2010 course on research in Scottish records. Often researchers view records of the United Kingdom as a whole, however record sets in Scotland can vary greatly from those in England and Wales and should be considered separately. This course will review how the customs and history of Scotland influence how we research there.

This course will cover sources available in the U.S., those available online, and those available only in Scotland. Students will learn the skill sets necessary to use these records and will prepare students with a good basis to embark on their search for Scottish ancestry.

Topics covered in this course will include:

How Scotland Came to Be

Immigration Schemes to US & Canada

US & Canada Sources For Immigrants

Scottish Records At The FHL

Online Resources/Scotlandspeople

Gazetteers and Maps

Civil Registration Records

Census Records

Church of Scotland Parish Registers

Nonconformist Church Records

Kirk Session Records

The Poor Law In Scotland

Occupational Records

Military Records

Scottish Handwriting

Courts and Jurisdictions

Probate Records

Land Records

Lairds, Lords, and Tenants

Preparing To Do Research In Scotland

Space is still available for this course.
