SLIG - Scottish Research

John M. Kitzmiller II, AG, FSG, FRSAI, FSA (Scot), leads the Salt Lake Institutes 2010 course on research in Scottish records. Often researchers view records of the United Kingdom as a whole, however record sets in Scotland can vary greatly from those in England and Wales and should be considered separately. This course will review how the customs and history of Scotland influence how we research there.

This course will cover sources available in the U.S., those available online, and those available only in Scotland. Students will learn the skill sets necessary to use these records and will prepare students with a good basis to embark on their search for Scottish ancestry.

Topics covered in this course will include:
  • How Scotland Came to Be
  • Immigration Schemes to US & Canada
  • US & Canada Sources For Immigrants
  • Scottish Records At The FHL
  • Online Resources/Scotlandspeople
  • Gazetteers and Maps
